Target Companies

Target Companies is your strategic company targeting hub: a place to discover, research, and build relationships with companies where your skills and experience would be valued. Instead of waiting for job postings, you identify the right companies first and create your own opportunities.

Most great roles are never posted. Research consistently shows that 70-85% of jobs are filled through networking, referrals, and internal promotions, not through applications to open listings. Target Companies helps you flip the script: rather than reacting to job boards, you proactively identify companies where you'd thrive and approach them with a compelling, personalized pitch.

Target Companies Overview

How It Works

Target Companies follows a three-step workflow designed to take you from market intelligence to actionable outreach:

1. Discover Companies

There are multiple ways to add companies to your list:

  • AI Company Finder: Discover companies across your recommended sectors using AI-powered search
  • Add Manually: Add a specific company by pasting its LinkedIn URL, entering details by hand, or searching LinkedIn directly
  • Chrome Extension: Save companies straight from LinkedIn as you browse

2. Get Company Insights

When you save a company, AI generates a personalized analysis explaining why this company fits you, not generic company information, but a tailored assessment based on your resume, your skills, and your career goals. Each company gets fit scores, positioning advice, and a networking strategy.

3. Create Speculative Roles

Define roles you'd like to pursue at target companies, even before they're officially posted. See the full Speculative Roles guide for details.

Accessing Target Companies

Target Companies is accessible from the left sidebar as a top-level section. Click Target Companies to open the page.

First-time users: You'll see an empty state with a Find Matching Companies button to get started with the AI Company Finder.

Returning users: Your target companies appear in a split-panel layout with the company list on the left and detailed insights on the right. The company list is sticky and scrolls independently, while the detail panel uses the page scroll.

The AI Company Finder

The AI Company Finder is your primary tool for discovering companies. Click the "Find Matching Companies" button in the toolbar to open it.

AI Company Finder Modal

Sector-Based Search

The left panel displays sectors from your Market Fit Report. Each sector shows:

IndicatorMeaning
Sector nameThe industry or vertical
Company countNumber of companies already found in this sector
Health scoreMarket health indicator (Expanding, Growing, Stable, Declining, Contracting)
Fit scoreHow closely this sector matches your background (Core fit, Adjacent fit, Lateral move, Career pivot, Major pivot)

Select a sector and click "Search" to find companies in that industry. The AI searches company databases to find real companies that match your profile and the selected sector.

After initial results appear, the button changes to "Search for more". Click it to discover additional companies in the same sector.

No Market Fit Report yet? The AI Company Finder works best when powered by your Market Fit Report sectors. If you haven't generated one, you'll see a link to create it. You can still use the Custom Search option without a Market Fit Report.

Custom Search

Select the "Custom Search" option at the bottom of the sector list to search for any type of company using free-text queries.

Custom Search

Type a description of the companies you're looking for. For example:

  • "AI startups in healthcare"
  • "Fintech companies in New York"
  • "Sustainability-focused enterprises in Europe"
  • "EdTech companies building learning platforms"

Custom Search is useful when you want to explore industries or company types beyond what your Market Fit Report recommends, or when you have a specific niche in mind.

Saving Companies

Each company card in the results displays a "Save Company" button. Click it to add the company to your Target Companies list.

Save Company Button

When you save a company:

  1. AI enrichment begins automatically: The AI researches the company and generates a personalized analysis (why it fits you, positioning advice, networking strategy, recent news, fit scores)
  2. Company data is linked: The system enriches the company with logos, ratings, and additional data
  3. The button changes to "Saved" with a checkmark

Already-saved companies show "Saved" immediately. Use the "Include saved" checkbox to toggle whether previously saved companies appear in results.

Company List

The left panel of the main page displays all your target companies in a scrollable, sticky list with independent scrolling.

Company List

Toolbar

The toolbar sits at the top of the page, just below the page header.

Filtering Your List

Use filters to focus on the companies most relevant to your current priorities. Filters combine with the quick search text box and the starred toggle.

Quick Filter

The text box in the toolbar filters the company list in real time as you type. It matches against company names.

Advanced Filters

Click the Filter button to open the advanced filter panel. A badge on the button shows the number of currently active filters at a glance.

The panel is organized into three columns:

ColumnWhat It Filters
IndustryFilter to companies in specific industries. Each industry shows a count of matching companies. Use the search box at the top to find a specific industry.
Company SizeFilter by size band: Startup, Growth, Mid-size, Large, Enterprise, Fortune 500, Public Sector.
My TagsFilter to companies with specific tags. Each tag shows a count of matching companies.

You can combine selections across all three columns. The list updates immediately as you check each item.

Active Filter Chips

When one or more advanced filters are active, they appear below the toolbar as closable chips. Click the × on any chip to remove that individual filter. Click Clear all filters in the filter panel to remove all active filters at once.

Filter Persistence

Your active filters are saved automatically and restored the next time you open the page. You do not need to reapply them after navigating away.

Company Cards

Each card in the list shows:

  • Company logo
  • Company name
  • Sector
  • Star toggle to quickly favorite/unfavorite
  • Enrichment spinner if insights are still being generated

Click any company card to view its full details in the right panel. Server-side pagination appears below the company list when there are more companies than the configured page size.

Company Detail

When you select a company, the right panel displays comprehensive information organized into three tabs.

Company Detail

Header

The detail header displays:

  • Company logo and name
  • Sector and size band (Startup, Growth, Mid-size, Large, Enterprise)
  • Links row: Clickable LinkedIn profile link, website link, and a Company Report link that opens the full Company Report modal
  • Tags: Colored tag chips assigned to this company (see Tags below)

Below the header, a "Create a Speculative Role" button lets you generate a hypothetical position at this company.

Company Insights Tab

The primary tab with AI-generated intelligence about the company:

Company Report Banner

If a company hasn't been linked to our company database yet (missing both LinkedIn URL and website), a banner appears prompting you to add identifying information. Click the "Edit Company" button on the banner to open the Edit Company modal and add a LinkedIn URL or website. Once identifying data is added, the system automatically looks up the company and enables the Company Report.

Fit Scores

Fit Scores Explained

Each company receives five fit scores on a 1-5 scale:

ScoreWhat It Measures
Mission AlignmentHow well the company's mission resonates with your values and goals
Culture FitAlignment with company culture based on your work style and preferences
Growth PotentialCareer growth opportunities at this company for someone with your profile
Skill MatchHow well your skills match roles typically hired at this company
OverallWeighted average considering all factors

These scores help you quickly compare companies and prioritize where to focus your outreach energy.

Enrichment Status

When you first save a company, you may see an enrichment banner indicating that AI analysis is in progress. Enrichment typically completes within 30-60 seconds. The page updates automatically when insights are ready. You don't need to refresh.

Open Listings Tab (Experimental)

The Open Listings tab surfaces job postings from the Callings.ai jobs database that are associated with this company. It is marked Experimental while coverage and accuracy are being refined.

Open Listings Tab

Important: Open Listings searches the Callings.ai internal jobs database, not the web or any external job board in real time. If no listings appear, it does not mean the company has no open roles. It simply means no matching postings are currently indexed for this company in our database.

Each listing card shows:

  • Job title and location
  • Fit score relative to your resume (generated lazily after the listings load)
  • Save button (bottom-right of each card) to add the listing directly to your Job Tracker pipeline
  • Hide button to dismiss a listing you're not interested in

Refreshing Listings

Click the Recheck button (circular arrow icon) at the top right of the tab to trigger a fresh lookup against the jobs database. This is useful if you believe the company has recently posted new roles that may not have appeared yet.

Fit Scores on Listings

After the listings load, the page silently scores each job against your primary resume. Fit scores appear on each card once scoring completes. If you have no resume on file, fit scores will not be shown.

Coverage Limitations

Open Listings coverage depends on how well each company is represented in the Callings.ai jobs database. Coverage varies by company size, geography, and industry. For a broader view of available roles, use the Company Report link in the company header, which provides additional context about the company's hiring patterns.

Notes Tab

The Notes tab provides a personal workspace for each company:

  • Add notes about conversations, impressions, or research
  • Track your interactions and outreach progress
  • Notes are private and only visible to you

Tags

Tags let you organize your target companies with your own labels. Create tags like "Top Priority", "Follow Up", "Series B", "Mission-Driven", or anything else that helps you stay organized. You can then filter your entire list to show only companies with a specific tag.

Adding Tags

Tags can be added in two places:

From the Company Detail header:

  1. Select a company to open its detail panel
  2. Click the + Tag button in the header (dashed border)
  3. Type a tag name — autocomplete suggests tags you've already created on other companies
  4. Press Enter or click a suggestion to apply the tag

From the Edit Company modal:

  1. Click Edit in the Company Insights toolbar
  2. The tag editor appears at the bottom of the form
  3. Add or remove tags the same way as in the detail header
  4. Click Save to apply all changes

Removing Tags

Click the × on any tag chip to remove it from a company. The tag is removed immediately.

Tag Autocomplete

When you start typing a tag name, the input suggests tags you've used on other companies. Selecting an existing tag keeps your labels consistent and makes filtering more useful. You can also type a brand-new label and press Enter to create it.

Filtering by Tag

Once tags are assigned, use the Filter button in the toolbar to filter your company list by one or more tags. The My Tags column in the filter panel lists all your tags with a count of how many companies have each tag. Check one or more tags to narrow the list.

Adding Companies Manually

Click "Add Manually" in the toolbar to open the Add Company modal. The modal offers four ways to add a company:

Add Company Modal

LinkedIn URL (Recommended)

The LinkedIn tab is the default and recommended method:

  1. Paste the company's LinkedIn URL (e.g., https://www.linkedin.com/company/microsoft)
  2. Click Add Company
  3. The system automatically enriches the company with AI-generated insights, logos, ratings, and fit analysis

This is the fastest way to add a company with full enrichment. The LinkedIn URL uniquely identifies the company and enables automatic data lookup.

Manual Entry

The Manual tab lets you enter company details by hand:

  1. Enter the Company Name (required)
  2. Optionally fill in: Website, Sector/Industry, Company Size (Startup, Growth, Mid-size, Large, Enterprise), Description
  3. Click Add Company

Companies added manually without a LinkedIn URL or website receive basic information only. To enable AI enrichment and the Company Report, edit the company later and add a LinkedIn URL or website.

Find on LinkedIn

The Find on LinkedIn tab helps you search for companies on LinkedIn directly:

  1. Enter Keywords for the company you're looking for
  2. Optionally filter by Industry, Location, and Company Size
  3. Click "Search on LinkedIn" to open LinkedIn's company search results in a new browser tab
  4. From LinkedIn, copy the company's URL and paste it in the LinkedIn tab to add it

This is useful when you know the type of company you want but don't have the exact LinkedIn URL.

Chrome Extension

The Chrome Extension tab shows the status of the Callings.ai Chrome Extension and provides installation instructions. With the Chrome Extension installed, you can save companies directly from LinkedIn as you browse (see Adding Companies from LinkedIn below).

Add Company Modal Tabs

Editing a Company

You can edit any company's details after adding it:

  1. Select the company in the list
  2. Click the Edit button in the Company Insights toolbar (or click "Edit Company" on the Company Report banner)
  3. The Edit Company modal opens with the current values pre-filled

Editable Fields

Auto-Linking

When you add a LinkedIn URL or Website to a company that doesn't have one yet, the system automatically:

  1. Searches the company database for a match
  2. If found, links the company to enable the Company Report and company ratings
  3. If not found, creates a new company record and triggers AI research to populate company data
  4. Triggers a Glassdoor ratings fetch for the linked company

This means you can add a company by name first, then come back later and add a LinkedIn URL to unlock the full Company Report and ratings.

Edit Company Modal

Adding Companies from LinkedIn

With the Callings.ai Chrome Extension installed, you can save companies directly from LinkedIn:

  1. Browse LinkedIn and visit any company page (e.g., linkedin.com/company/google)
  2. The Chrome Extension detects you're on a company page (works with /company/, /school/, and /showcase/ URLs)
  3. Click the extension button to add the company to your Target Companies list
  4. The company appears on your Target Companies page with AI enrichment starting automatically

If the company is already in your list, the extension shows it as "already saved."

Your Target Companies page updates in real time when you add companies via the Chrome Extension, even if the page is already open in another tab. New companies appear in the list automatically without needing to refresh.

Creating Speculative Roles

From any enriched company, click "Create a Speculative Role" to generate a hypothetical position tailored to both your skills and the company's needs. The role is saved to your Job Tracker where you can use all the standard tools (Custom Resume, Cover Letter, Interview Prep, etc.).

For the complete guide on creating, editing, and using speculative roles, see Speculative Roles.

Subscription required: Creating speculative roles requires an active subscription.

The Workflow: From Discovery to Opportunity

Target Companies is designed to work as part of a larger career strategy:

1. Generate your Market Fit Report → Understand which sectors value your skills

2. Discover companies → Use the AI Company Finder, add manually, or save from LinkedIn via the Chrome Extension

3. Save promising companies → AI enriches each with personalized insights

4. Edit and enrich → Add LinkedIn URLs or websites to unlock Company Reports and ratings

5. Review insights → Understand why each company fits, how to position yourself, and who to contact

6. Create speculative roles → Define the positions you'd pursue at each company

7. Add to Job Tracker → Use the full suite of tools (Custom Resume, Cover Letter, Interview Prep)

8. Build relationships → Use the networking strategy to approach the right people

This workflow helps you access the hidden job market, the 70-85% of roles that are never publicly posted.

Tips & Best Practices

Start with Your Market Fit Report

The AI Company Finder is most powerful when it has sector data from your Market Fit Report. Generate your Market Fit Report first. It provides the industry intelligence that makes company recommendations relevant and personalized.

Cast a Wide Net, Then Focus

Save more companies than you think you need. You can always dismiss or delete companies later, but having a broader list gives you more options and helps you spot unexpected opportunities. Use stars to mark your top priorities and the star filter to focus when you're ready to take action.

Use the Positioning Advice

Each company's Positioning section contains specific talking points tailored to that company. These aren't generic suggestions. They reference your actual skills and the company's actual needs. Use these when:

  • Writing connection requests
  • Drafting cold outreach emails
  • Preparing for informational interviews
  • Updating your resume for a specific company

Follow the Networking Strategy

The Networking Strategy section provides step-by-step outreach plans. These are concrete, actionable steps, not vague advice like "network more." They tell you which departments to target, what roles to look for, and how to approach specific types of people at the company.

Revisit and Refresh

Companies evolve. Revisit your target companies periodically:

  • Check recent news for new developments
  • Re-search sectors for newly discovered companies
  • Delete companies that no longer fit your goals
  • Add notes about conversations and progress

Combine with Company Reports

Click the Company Report link in the company detail header to generate a deeper analysis. The Company Report provides additional intelligence beyond what's in the Target Companies insights, including competitive landscape, company culture signals, and detailed hiring patterns. If the Company Report link is unavailable, add a LinkedIn URL or website via the Edit button to enable it.

Add Identifying Data Early

When adding companies manually by name only, come back and add a LinkedIn URL or website as soon as you can. This unlocks the full Company Report, Glassdoor ratings, and richer AI analysis. Look for the banner in the Company Insights tab prompting you to add identifying data.

Use the Chrome Extension for Passive Discovery

Install the Chrome Extension to build your target company list as you naturally browse LinkedIn. When you come across an interesting company, one click saves it to your list with automatic AI enrichment. Your Target Companies page updates in real time, so you can continue browsing without interruption.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How does the AI Company Finder find companies?
A: It searches company databases to find real companies that match your profile and the selected sector. The search considers your skills, location, and career goals from your resume and Market Fit Report.

Q: Do I need a Market Fit Report to use Target Companies?
A: No, but it's recommended. Without a Market Fit Report, you can still use Custom Search in the AI Company Finder, Add Manually, or the Chrome Extension. The Market Fit Report adds sector-based search with health scores and fit scores.

Q: How long does AI enrichment take?
A: Typically 30-60 seconds per company. The page updates automatically when enrichment is complete. No need to refresh.

Q: Is saving companies free?
A: The AI Company Finder ("Find Companies" button) requires an active subscription. However, you can add companies manually for free using the "Add Manually" button or the Chrome Extension, and each added company automatically receives AI-generated insights (fit analysis, positioning advice, networking strategy). Creating speculative roles also requires a subscription.

Q: How many companies can I save?
A: There's no fixed limit. Save as many companies as you want to build a comprehensive target list.

Q: What's the difference between "Find Companies" and "Add Manually"?
A: Find Companies uses AI to discover companies based on your profile and sector analysis. Add Manually lets you add a specific company you already know about via its LinkedIn URL (recommended), by entering details manually, or by searching LinkedIn to find it.

Q: Can I edit a company after adding it?
A: Yes. Select the company and click the Edit button in the toolbar. You can update the name, website, LinkedIn URL, sector, size, and description. Adding a LinkedIn URL or website to a company that doesn't have one automatically links it to our company database and enables the Company Report.

Q: What does the "Company Report Unavailable" banner mean?
A: This appears when a company hasn't been matched to our company database. Add a LinkedIn URL or website via the Edit button to enable the Company Report. The system will automatically look up and link the company.

Q: Can I add companies from LinkedIn using the Chrome Extension?
A: Yes. With the Chrome Extension installed, visit any LinkedIn company page and click the extension button. The company is automatically added to your Target Companies list with full AI enrichment. Works with company, school, and showcase pages.

Q: What is the "Open Listings" tab and why does it show no results?
A: Open Listings searches the Callings.ai internal jobs database for postings associated with the selected company. Seeing zero results does not mean the company has no open roles. It only means no matching postings are currently indexed in our database. Coverage varies by company. Use the Company Report for a broader view of the company's hiring activity, and check the company's LinkedIn page or careers site for the most up-to-date listings.

Q: Does my Target Companies page update when I add companies from the Chrome Extension?
A: Yes. The page updates in real time via a heartbeat signal. New companies appear in the list automatically without manual refresh.

Q: Can I remove a company from my list?
A: Yes. Click the Delete Company button in the company detail panel. Notes and insights for that company will be permanently deleted.

Q: What are the fit scores based on?
A: Fit scores are generated by AI analysis that considers your resume, the company's industry position, their typical hiring patterns, and alignment across five dimensions: Mission Alignment, Culture Fit, Growth Potential, Skill Match, and Overall.

Q: How is this different from the Networking Targets in Job Tools?
A: Target Companies focuses on finding and analyzing companies, organizations where you'd want to work. Networking Targets (in Job Tools) focuses on finding people, specific contacts at a company who can help your candidacy for a particular job. They complement each other: discover companies here, then find contacts there.

Q: Can I search for companies in sectors not listed by my Market Fit Report?
A: Yes. Use the Custom Search option in the AI Company Finder to search any industry, company type, or niche you're interested in.

Q: What does "Create a Speculative Role" do?
A: It generates a hypothetical job opportunity tailored to your skills and the company's needs. Once created, it's saved to your Job Tracker. See the full Speculative Roles guide.

Q: How often should I search for new companies?
A: Search whenever your career focus shifts or you want fresh perspectives. Markets change, new companies emerge, and your own priorities evolve. There's no cost to re-searching a sector.

Q: Can I configure how many companies appear per page?
A: Yes. Click the Settings button in the toolbar and choose your preferred page size (10, 20, 50, or 100). The setting is saved and persisted across sessions.

Q: What are tags and how do I use them?
A: Tags are custom labels you assign to companies to help you organize your list. For example, you might tag certain companies "Top Priority", "Warm Contact", or "Series B". Once tagged, you can filter your list to show only companies with a given tag using the advanced Filter panel. Add tags via the tag editor in the company detail header or in the Edit Company modal.

Q: Do my tags carry over between sessions?
A: Yes. Tags are saved with each company record. They persist until you explicitly remove them.

Q: Can I apply the same tag to multiple companies?
A: Yes. Type the same tag name when editing any company and the autocomplete will suggest it. Reusing tags is what makes filtering by tag useful.

Q: What filters are available in the advanced filter panel?
A: The filter panel has three columns: Industry (filter by industry/sector with counts), Company Size (Startup, Growth, Mid-size, Large, Enterprise, Fortune 500, Public Sector), and My Tags (your custom tags with counts). Filters from all three columns can be combined. Active filters are shown as chips below the toolbar and are saved across sessions.

Q: How do I clear all active filters quickly?
A: Open the Filter panel and click Clear all filters at the top right. You can also remove filters one at a time by clicking the × on any active filter chip below the toolbar.
