What our analysts see this month

Competitive market | next 3-6 months

Minneapolis-St. Paul still has real openings in this category, with more than 150 observed postings across more than 30 companies over the last 90 days, but it is no longer an easy market: metro unemployment was 4.7% in August and Minnesota personal care & fitness postings were down 3.3% year-over-year in September. The clearest demand is on the fitness side—about 75% of local postings sit in health, wellness & fitness or wellness and fitness services—and Life Time's new ISSA interview pathway suggests employers want certified, ready-to-coach candidates fast. For job seekers, that makes this a workable market if you are willing to be on-site and can prove coaching readiness, but a tougher one if you need remote work or are entering without credentials.

Best positioned: Your best odds are as an on-site trainer or instructor with CPR/AED, a recognized certified personal trainer credential, solid client-assessment and programming skills, and enough sales confidence to win and retain clients.

Main caution: The biggest mistake is treating this like a remote wellness market or assuming enthusiasm can replace credentials; about 95% or more of roles are on-site, and certification screens are common.

Where the demand is

Real openings are concentrated on the fitness side of this category. In the local postings sample, health, wellness & fitness accounts for about 50% of postings and wellness and fitness services about 25%, while retail, healthcare, and education each account for about 5%. That means the shortest path to interviews is usually through on-site trainer, instructor, or club-floor roles rather than a broad search across every sub-role in the category. The named employer signals point the same way: the local postings sample is led by Svetness, while Life Time, YMCA of the North, and Anytime Fitness appear as visible regional employers, and Life Time now offers interview screening for eligible ISSA-certified trainers. Hiring is moderately concentrated, about 70% of roles are entry-level, and typical active postings stay open around 38 days, so speed and fit matter more than waiting for a perfect opening. Evidence is much thinner here for salons, grooming, childcare, and tour-guide work than for fitness-led roles. If your background is outside fitness, read the market as selective rather than broadly open.

• Commercial gyms and athletic clubs (high): This is the clearest opportunity pocket, with most local posting activity concentrated in health, wellness & fitness and wellness and fitness services, and with visible employers including Life Time, YMCA of the North, and Anytime Fitness.
• In-home and private training (moderate): Svetness leads the local postings sample, which suggests steady demand for trainer-led services outside the traditional big-box floor, especially for candidates who can sell, retain, and manage clients directly.
• Beauty and other personal-service sub-roles (limited): These roles are included in the category, but this bundle provides far less direct local hiring evidence for them than it does for fitness roles.

Where to focus: If you want interviews in the next 30-90 days, focus first on on-site fitness roles where CPR/AED, a recognized CPT, and clear client-retention language can be screened quickly.

Roles worth searching next

• Physical therapist aide: It uses client support, movement cueing, and comfort with exercise settings, but in a clinical environment.
• Community health worker: It fits candidates whose strength is behavior change, coaching conversations, and wellness follow-up rather than selling sessions.
• Member services or wellness sales coordinator: It is a practical move for candidates who have client acquisition and retention skill but are not yet ready to coach full time.
• Occupational therapy aide: It appeals to candidates who enjoy hands-on support and structured client progress in a care setting.

What postings ask for

• CPR/AED certification (table_stakes | immediate): It is the most common certification signal in local postings and shows basic readiness for floor and session work. Who: Everyone targeting trainer, instructor, or club-floor roles.
• Recognized certified personal trainer credential (table_stakes | immediate): Local postings frequently ask for certified personal trainer credentials, and nationally an NCCA-accredited certification is practically required for most commercial gym work. Who: Entry-level applicants, career switchers, and anyone trying to break into commercial gyms.
• Client assessment and workout programming (table_stakes | immediate): Assessment and programming are among the most requested local hard skills and are the difference between 'fitness enthusiast' and 'coach-ready' in hiring screens. Who: Entry-level and mid-career trainers.
• Nutrition knowledge (differentiator | near-term): Nutrition knowledge shows up often in local postings and helps employers see you as a broader client-support hire, not just a rep counter. Who: Trainers who want better package sales, longer retention, or hybrid coaching work.
• Client acquisition, retention, and sales confidence (premium | immediate): Gym operators say business-readiness skills matter alongside fitness credentials, especially where trainers must keep schedules full. Who: Mid-career trainers, independent trainers, and career switchers from sales or hospitality.
• Wearables, heart-rate apps, and data literacy (premium | near-term): National guidance for trainers increasingly highlights heart-rate monitoring tools, functional screening, and the ability to turn client data into clear coaching decisions. Who: Candidates aiming for premium clubs, hybrid coaching, or younger digitally engaged clients.
