Our read
What it needs
This is the first design hire at an early company, so the role covers research, product thinking, interface design and a shared design system, all with little process around it. A strong candidate can turn messy insurance workflows into clear screens, talk with customers directly, and work closely with engineers to ship. Good taste and sound judgment about when a quick prototype is enough matter as much as polish.
How it fits the AI era
The product is built around AI agents doing back-office work with human experts reviewing it, so the design challenge is making agent activity easy to follow. Designers decide how people see what an agent did, where they step in, and how they handle exceptions. AI can speed up drafts and prototypes, but judgment about trust, clarity and what users truly need stays with the designer.
How it builds AI experience
The role offers hands-on practice designing human and agent workflows for commercial insurance, where accuracy matters and review steps are real. To build this experience beforehand, a candidate could prototype a small tool where an AI agent handles a document-heavy task and a person approves or corrects the result. Studying how existing AI products show confidence, sources and errors would also help.
