Why The Messenger Matters
Truth in professional life no longer travels the way it used to.
For a long time, the message itself carried most of the weight. If the facts were strong, that was enough. Then mass media changed the equation. McLuhan's idea that the medium shapes meaning showed up everywhere: print gave authority, television gave legitimacy, and a polished corporate site made companies feel credible.
I think we are now in a third model: the messenger carries the truth.
- First came trust in the message.
- Then came trust in the channel.
- Now trust often starts with the person.
That shift shows up in hiring as much as in marketing. People do not just assess a resume or a job title. They look for a voice, a point of view, and a pattern of judgment. In a market flooded with AI-generated language, that difference matters even more. When everyone can produce polished copy, identity becomes the signal.
Building Callings.ai pushed me deeper into that idea. Over the past four years, I have spent time with recruiters, coaches, hiring managers, job seekers, and workforce professionals, trying to understand what actually helps someone stand out without turning themselves into a slogan. My conclusion is simple: personal brand is not decoration. It is the work of making values, strengths, and judgment legible to other people and to the systems screening us.
The job hunt is no longer only about applying. More and more, it is about being recognized and found for a distinct way of thinking before the conversation even starts.
