The Authenticity Paradox At Work

By Philippe Cailloux ยท

The authenticity paradox at work is real.

The deeper I go into personal brand and professional identity with Callings.ai, the more I find myself studying the etiquette of authenticity at work.

This article makes a useful point. Being authentic is not always the same as being effective. In a professional setting, context matters. Judgment matters. The way we show up has to work for the people around us, not just feel true to us in the moment.

That matters even more now, when AI can help everyone produce polished language in seconds. The risk is not only generic content. It is also confusing raw self-expression with a strong professional voice. They are not the same thing.

A real voice is shaped. It reflects values, strengths, taste, and point of view. But it also shows restraint. It knows when to be direct, when to adapt, and when to leave something unsaid. That is not fakery. That is maturity.

In the job market, this distinction matters. More people are discovered through what they write, share, and signal over time. Being known for a clear point of view is different from bringing every unfiltered impulse to work.

That is one reason I have become so interested in identity, voice, and personal brand. Not as performance, but as disciplined self-expression.

The goal is not to sound more like ourselves in every moment. It is to become more intentional about which parts of ourselves we put to work.
