Generation Versus Creation

By Philippe Cailloux ยท

AI makes generation abundant. That only makes creation more valuable.

AI is very good at generating content. Text, images, code, video, summaries, arguments. That matters.

But generation is not the same as creation.

Generation is built from patterns, training, and recombination. Creation starts somewhere else. It starts with a spark, a judgment, a point of view, a choice about what matters and why.

After spending time building with GPT, that distinction feels more important to me, not less. When I bring an original idea, AI can help me shape it, test it, and express it faster. In that case, it behaves like a tool, almost like a typewriter with range.

When the idea is missing, AI can still produce a lot. Sometimes it even looks polished. But polished output is not authorship.

Humans have always survived by building better tools. New tools carry the know-how of the people who came before us. AI fits that history. What it does not replace is the human part that creates, thinks, and judges.

That is where I think the real work is now: not competing with the tool on generation, but getting better at the parts only a person can originate.
