Exits Reveal Company Character
Hiring tells me very little about a company. Exits tell me almost everything.
After years building product teams, partnerships, and launch narratives, I have learned that departures are read by three groups at once: the people leaving, the people staying, and the people who may join later. All three are watching for the same thing: whether the company behaves with clarity and respect when the script gets harder.
That is why I treat the first 90 days after a transition as the real trust window.
- Say what changed, who it affects, and what support exists.
- Give departing employees dignity: clear communication, real assistance, and a clean handoff.
- Help the remaining team understand priorities, workload, and what is not changing.
This is not just a people issue. It is culture design, brand protection, and risk control in one moment. When exits are handled poorly, the damage spreads fast: morale drops, candidate trust erodes, and the story keeps traveling long after the reorg is over.
When I treat departures with the same care as hiring and launch planning, the company people remember is not the one in the press release. It is the one they actually experienced.
