Summary

Lead the Battery System software domain, overseeing embedded C++ development and model-based control algorithms for commercial eVTOL operations.

About this role

Company Overview Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. At Joby, we've been working to make that dream a reality since 2009 and we're now in the final stages of certifying our aircraft with the FAA. With plans to launch our aircraft in the US and Dubai, we're now scaling manufacturing and preparing for the launch of our commercial service.

Overview Joby’s Battery System serves as the core of our electric aircraft, encompassing the battery packs, the safety-critical Battery Management System (BMS) software, and the high-performance Ground Charging Equipment designed for rapid turnaround. This integrated ecosystem is meticulously engineered to support the demands of commercial eVTOL operations.

As a member of the technical program management team, you will lead the Battery System software domain, overseeing embedded C++ development for the BMS and Ground Charging System, along with model-based control algorithms. You will be responsible for facilitating design and driving execution through Scrum methodologies, managing DO-178C certification activities, and steering software through the release process for flight. In close partnership with the hardware and electrical PMs, you will manage the comprehensive Battery System technical roadmap, ensuring alignment on timelines, dependencies, and delivery milestones.

The position will be based at our San Carlos location with occasional travel to Marina and Santa Cruz sites as needed.

Responsibilities

Single point of accountability for Battery System software program execution across two development methodologies — embedded C++ and model-based design — on independent sprint cadences

Facilitate design without doing the design: translating architecture discussions into well-scoped workstreams, making dependencies and critical paths explicit, and driving risks and recovery plans to closure

Run scrum for the BMS flight software and Ground Charging software teams — sprint planning, execution, and summaries — across their independent cadences

Facilitate the model-based design lifecycle: requirements flow-down, sprint execution, characterization testing, and formal hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) verification, including rig scheduling, requirement coverage traceability, and failure disposition

Own the MBD-to-C++ release chain from development complete through characterization testing, HIL verification, documentation, and release evidence

Program-manage the DO-178C certification effort with our certification partner, software verification team, and FAA software designee, including high-level/low-level requirement traceability

Maintain an integrated program schedule, and partner with the Battery System hardware/electrical program manager on the overall Battery System roadmap, timeline, and cross-team dependencies

Coordinate on-time delivery into system-level integration and test environments for integrated testing and aircraft safe-for-flight release, including powertrain plant models for HIL verification

Coordinate flight software release with the broader Joby software organization, and Ground Charging software integration with fleet infrastructure and fielded equipment

Run the program's operating cadence: program reviews, key metrics (technical, schedule, risk), and concise status reporting to leadership

Identify, advocate for, and manage the development of test assets for software prototyping and verification

Required

Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field with 5+ years of relevant experience

5+ years of technical program management for embedded software or integrated hardware/software development, managing requirements, priorities, scope, and schedule

Experience performing the Scrum master role for embedded or firmware teams, including managing multiple workstreams on different sprint cadences

Experience delivering software under a formal safety-critical process (DO-178C preferred; ISO 26262 / ASIL D functional safety is a strong equivalent)

Deep familiarity with the embedded software development lifecycle (C++, real-time targets), with the ability to make engineering-informed program decisions

Strong track record of managing complex cross-functional programs and dependencies across teams you don't directly control

Experience with Jira, Confluence, Smartsheet, or similar tools, as well as requirements management tools (e.g., Jama, DOORS, Polarion)

Clear, well-structured, and concise communication tailored to each audience, from engineers to executives

Ability to manage a cross-functional team, including interfaces with hardware design and test teams, through an iterative design process

Desired

Familiarity with DO-178C program execution, including DO-331 (model-based development) and DO-330 (tool qualification)

Familiarity with model-based design workflows (MATLAB/Simulink) and the model-to-code handoff

Familiarity with HIL test platforms (e.g., dSPACE, NI, Speedgoat)

Familiarity with battery systems, BMS, high voltage systems, or EV charging / EVSE

Familiarity with FAA or EASA certification programs (ARP4754A)

Project Management Professional (PMP) certification

Experience thriving in a fast-paced, quick-iteration hardware environment
