AI Chat is a conversational panel built into Callings.ai editors that lets you discuss your content with AI, ask for feedback, and give direct instructions to modify it - all in the same conversation.
The AI Chat panel appears consistently across the platform wherever you are editing AI-generated content. Whether you are refining a cover letter, polishing a resume, editing a campaign card, or crafting an outreach message, the same chat interface is available and adapted to the context you are in.
| Feature | Where to find it |
|---|---|
| Base Resume AI Editor | Left panel in the Resume Editor |
| Custom Resume Editor | Left panel in the three-panel editor |
| Cover Letter Editor | Left panel in the three-panel editor |
| Campaign Card Editors | Left panel when editing any campaign card text |
| Campaign Cover Image Editor | Left panel for AI-guided image regeneration |
| Campaign Promote Tools | Left panel when editing supporter messages and social posts |
The AI Chat panel sits on the left side of any editor that supports it. Type a message in the input field at the bottom and submit it. The AI reads your current document, understands the context of what you are working on, and responds.

You can use the chat in two complementary modes within the same conversation:
Use the chat to explore ideas, ask questions, or get feedback before making changes:
- "What parts of this cover letter are the strongest?"
- "Does this resume summary feel too generic?"
- "What tone does this campaign story convey?"
- "What should I emphasize more for a product design role?"
The AI analyzes your current content and provides specific feedback. These exchanges are conversational - the AI does not modify your document when you ask a question, only when you give an instruction.
Give the AI a direct instruction and it updates your document:
- "Shorten the opening paragraph to two sentences"
- "Make the tone more conversational throughout"
- "Focus more on my experience at Orbit Interactive"
- "Add specific metrics to the second paragraph"
- "Rewrite the summary section to emphasize leadership"
- "Condense everything to fit on one page"
After each edit, you can review the change and keep it, undo it, or ask for further refinements.
You can mix both modes freely. A single conversation might start with a question ("is this too long?"), receive feedback, then follow with an instruction ("make it 20% shorter"), all in the same chat thread.
In the most fully featured editors (Custom Resume, Cover Letter, Base Resume AI Editor), the AI Chat is part of a three-panel workspace:

| Panel | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Left - AI Chat | Conversation with the AI: questions, feedback, editing instructions |
| Center - Editor | Full-text editing area where your content lives and is directly editable |
| Right - Page Preview | Live preview of how the document will look when printed or downloaded |
The three panels are resizable - drag the dividers between them to adjust widths based on your workflow. You can make the preview larger when checking layout, or expand the chat when you are in an intensive editing conversation.
The AI Chat has access to the information you have shared with Callings.ai. It does not only see the document in front of it - it can also reference:
- Your resume and work history
- Your career goals and ideal job profile
- The specific job description you are targeting (when working in job tools)
- Your personal branding voice and positioning
- Questionnaire answers and career preferences
- Your previous messages in the current conversation
This means you do not need to re-explain your background in every message. The AI already knows your context and can apply that knowledge to improve your content without you having to spell it out each time.
Each AI Chat panel includes standard controls:
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Clear Chat | Removes the conversation history while keeping your current document content unchanged |
| Revert | Restores your document to a previous saved state. In some editors this is labeled "Revert to Last Saved" |
| Undo / Redo | Steps through the edit history for the current document, available in editors with full undo stacks |
Each editor maintains its own separate chat history. Conversations in your Cover Letter editor do not affect your Custom Resume chat, and your Campaign Card editor has its own independent thread. You can close and reopen any editor and your chat history for that context is preserved exactly where you left it.
The AI Chat is actively being expanded. It will have access to more of your profile over time and a growing understanding of the specific documents it is helping you edit. The goal is for the AI to increasingly understand not just what the document says, but what you as a professional are trying to convey - and to offer suggestions that genuinely match your voice and situation.
Capabilities being developed include:
- Deeper understanding of your target companies and industries
- More proactive suggestions based on patterns the AI notices across your content
- Greater awareness of how a document has evolved through multiple editing sessions
- Better understanding of the audience and purpose for each document type
- Be specific: "Make the second sentence shorter" works better than "make it shorter"
- Reference sections by content: "The part about my experience at Acme" is clearer than "the third paragraph"
- Combine information and instruction: "I led a team of 8 engineers on this project - can you add that to my experience section?" gives the AI new facts to work with
- Ask before editing: Starting with "what do you think about this section?" before asking for changes often surfaces better instructions to give
- Clear chat when switching focus: Starting a fresh conversation for a new editing goal helps the AI stay focused on what you actually want next
Q: Does the AI remember my preferences from previous sessions?
A: The chat history for each editor is saved and restored when you return to it within a session. The AI's knowledge of your content comes from your current profile data, which is always up to date.
Q: Can the AI make mistakes?
A: Yes. Always review AI-generated changes before saving or downloading. Use Undo and Revert to step back if a change is not what you wanted. Treat each AI edit as a first draft that you confirm or adjust.
Q: What happens if I clear the chat?
A: Clearing the chat removes the conversation history. Your document content is not affected. The AI starts the next conversation fresh, without memory of the cleared exchange.
Q: Why is AI Chat sometimes disabled or grayed out?
A: In the Custom Resume editor, the AI Chat is temporarily disabled while you have unresolved suggestions to review. Accept or reject all pending suggestions first, then the chat activates automatically. This ensures the AI is working with your finalized content rather than a document that still has pending decisions.
Q: Can I use the chat to ask about topics unrelated to my content?
A: The AI Chat is scoped to helping with the document you are editing. It works best when your messages are related to your content, your career context, or editing decisions. General questions outside that scope may get limited responses.
