NCC: National Certified Counselor

National Certified Counselor (NCC), issued by National Board for Certified Counselors. 121 coaches in our directory list it.

What it means
A national certification for professional counselors from the National Board for Certified Counselors. It is separate from a state license but requires graduate counseling education and a national exam.
What it takes
A graduate degree in counseling (at least 48 semester hours, including career counseling and supervised field experience), a passing score on the National Counselor Examination (NCE) or the NCMHCE, a professional endorsement, and 3,000 hours of supervised post-graduate counseling with 100 hours of supervision (waived for graduates of CACREP-accredited programs and fully licensed counselors). Recertified every 5 years with 100 hours of continuing education.
What it tells you
Graduate-level counseling training plus a national exam; a strong signal when a career decision is tangled up with stress, confidence or mental health.
